I’m in High School, do I really need a resume?
Yes! Young folks need to stand out in today’s job market. Once you contain all of your relevant experiences in a professional resume, the resume will grow with you as you grow in your skills and work experience.
But I don’t have any work experience!
Nonsense. You have accumulated work experiences and skills even if they are ‘babysitting’ or ‘elder care’ – even if these experiences are for your own family. If you know how to present these experiences in a professional way, and that’s where I come in, we can craft a resume that will get you the interview!
I’ve been working in one sector for a while now, and I’d like to switch sectors. How can I present my experience in a way that allows me to transition into a different employment sector?
Great question! We can format your experiences into a Functional Resume and highlight your Transferable Skills – skills that are desired by most every employer. Examples of Transferable Skills include written and verbal communication, effective time management, and conflict resolution/problem solving. The idea is this; you wish to paint a picture in the employer’s mind as to how your prior experience is perfect for this new job, even if your prior experience is in a different sector.
I’ve been raising my family and haven’t worked in a while; how do I reenter the job market? Or, I have gaps in my employment, what should I do?
Great questions! Lots of folks have taken a break to raise families or take care of important people in their lives. This is where a well-crafted Functional Resume comes into play. A Functional Resume helps to highlight your skills so that your unique skills and experience shines through, and not the gaps in your employment.
Besides resume writing and education, what is your background?
I have been fortunate to work in different sectors throughout my life. I started out working for lawyers as an accident investigator as I earned my BS in Criminal Justice from St. John’s University and my Paralegal Certification from the College of Staten Island. I worked in the private sector for a major commercial insurance company in Risk Management, and then went back to school for my Masters in Education, also from St. John’s University. I worked in elementary education as a science teacher and was even a contract instructor at the Staten Island Zoo, handling animals and presenting them to school groups. From there I went to work for a fantastic nonprofit in NYC whose mission is to improve the lives of youth who need a bit of a helping hand. So, as you can see, I have worked in varied fields, which only adds to my industry knowledge and helps me to craft the most effective resumes!
